CLOUDCROFT ONLINE NEWSLETTER #129

Dear Subscriber:

I'm going to spill the beans.

The summer months in Cloudcroft are filled with visitors and
festivals and parades and art shows.

In the fall, however...after Labor Day...the mountain belongs
to the natives. School has started. Vacations are over.

It's a great time to be in Cloudcroft for locals and for
visitors that discover the charms of the village after the
summer.

I tarried at the golf course today on the way home from the
village. It was lush and green. In a few weeks it will likely
be under a blanket of snow. From my vantage point above the
ninth hole, I saw a couple playing golf.

There was no one behind them in a hurry to tee off. There
was no one in front of them worrying over a putt. Just he
and her...by themselves...loving the solitude. It was
probably a lot like being the only two kids in Disneyland.

I could tell you I saw a family of deer and a bear and her
cub watching from the woods, but I would be lying.

I think I recognized them. Two locals who spent the summer
taking care of business. Today they played. I wanted to
jump out of my truck and join them, but I wasn't invited
and I think I would have disturbed the picture. Besides, I
didn't have my clubs with me.

We find ourselves in the nether season. Not summer and not
winter. The trees are changing colors. It's a time to reflect.
A time to goof off. It's my favorite time of the year.

The hummers are leaving. Peggy is concerned about air leaks
under the doors. The firewood is in. There's an urgency to get
ready for the winter.

We have four definite seasons in the Sacramentos. It's not just
a Chamber of Commerce slogan. It's a fact.

I love this place.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Newsletter:

Don, I do miss you on the radio, I still listen to KLLL, but
it has changed greatly!

When I read the newsletter today, and you said that about
combat, I thought of my husband (when do I not think of him?).
He has been in Germany for the last month, on training, and
hasn't been able to e-mail or call, since the 8th, because of
the 24 op. orders they are on.

When I finally got an e-mail last night, I found that the
weather there is going about like Cloudcroft, lows in the
30-40's and 60's for the highs. They have no heat in their
rooms, "it's like camping out", he'd rather be in Cloudcroft!

Then he writes "These games are 'interesting', but I'm ready
for the real thing and get it over". Like you said "boredom",
I just hope he doesn't experience the "pure horror", with all
the bomb threats. He will be home (hopefully) on the 25th, at
least until January, when he will be deployed to Kosovo for 7
months.

If anyone is reading this that has a soldier in the military,
reach out to your Family Readiness Group in your soldiers unit,
it is amazing, talking with people who know what your going
through!

I am glad your mother is OK, and my heart is with the Caldwell
family, in their great loss. Thank you for the newsletter, you
are where you should be.

God Bless America!

Dear Newsletter:

I can relate to the "Mom" story - it reminded me of this,
author unknown:

IF I KNEW

IF I KNEW THAT IT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME
THAT I'D SEE YOU FALL ASLEEP
I WOULD TUCK YOU IN MORE TIGHTLY
AND PRAY THE LORD, YOUR SOUL TO KEEP

IF I KNEW IT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME
THAT I SEE YOU WALK OUT THE DOOR,
I WOULD GIVE YOU A HUG AND A KISS
AND CALL YOU BACK FOR ONE MORE

IF I KNEW IT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME
I'D HEAR YOUR VOICE IN PRAISE,
I WOULD VIDEO TAPE EACH WORD
TO PLAY THEM BACK DAY AFTER DAY

IF I KNEW IT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME
I WOULD BE THERE TO SHARE YOUR DAY
SO SURE THAT YOU'D HAVE SO MANY MORE,
I WOULD NOT LET THIS ONE SLIP AWAY

FOR SURELY THERE'S ALWAYS TOMORROW
BUT JUST IN CASE - TODAY IS ALL WE GET
LET ME SAY HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU
SO THAT NEITHER OF US WILL EVER FORGET

Thanks Don, for all the special moments that you share with
your readers!

Dear Newsletter:

I need information about cemeteries in or around Cloudcroft
other than the James Canyon Cemetery.

I stopped in Cloudcroft recently hoping to find the location
of graves I had heard were in Cloudcroft. I asked directions in
a couple of places, but I was never able to find the graves
that I was told were in town somewhere.

I was also told there was a cemetery just out of Cloudcroft,
but could not get specific directions to the location. Could
anyone help me with this?

Thanks.
Kathy Tidwell
