May 9, 2003 – The Walker Fire which started in the Walker Canyon area, is approximately seven miles east of Cloudcroft and approximately five miles north of the township of Mayhill. No evacuations have been ordered at this time. Some structures are threatened. The approximate size of the fire is 1800 acres and burning in mixed conifer. The following resources have been requested or are on-scene: One lead plane, one heavy Air Tanker, one air attack and one Type 1 crew are currently working the fire, and an additional air attack, along with six type one and six type two crews have been ordered. Temporary flight restrictions are in place at this time, and the Lincoln Interagency Zone requests everyone’s cooperation. Larry Raley’s Type 2 Incident Management Team from Silver City, N.M., will take over the fire. Winds are blowing from the south/southwest at 15-25 miles an hour with gusts to 30.
