CLOUDCROFT ONLINE NEWSLETTER #34
November 17, 2000
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Subscriber:

An editor is always a little fearful of asking for a response
from readers. If the readers ignore you, you're left with egg
on your face and a lot of 'splainin' to do.

Imagine my feelings when Andy Hospidar told me the response
to his appeal for used stuffed toys in last week's newsletter
was met with dozens of contributions from you, the readers.

He said not to worry. Every stuffed animal will be graciously
accepted and appreciated. If it turns out there are more than
the ambulance service can use, he will distribute the rest to
the Sheriff's Office, the Fire Department, etc.

Thanks, everybody. If you haven't responded to Andy's request
for used-but-not-too-abused stuffed animals, but intended to,
it is not too late. Email him at AndyJ@zianet.com.

So, how about that election?

LOOKING AT THE WEATHER
----------------------------------------------------------------
Cold nights and cloudy days have been the rule of thumb in the
Sacramento's recently. The recent snow is melting bit by bit,
but still drapes from the roofs. The people around the area
dependent on winter tourism are hoping for a fresh snow soon
before it all turns to mud.

High temperatures occasionally make their way into the lower
40s with lows dipping into the mid-teens.

VILLAGE POLITICS
----------------------------------------------------------------
FODORS.COM is a website devoted to international vacation
destinations.

In their latest posting, Cloudcroft has been listed among the
top 10 most over looked and underrated winter destinations
internationally.

INSIDE THE SHOP -- BLUE WATER REMAX REAL ESTATE
----------------------------------------------------------------
Blue Water Real Estate has just recently joined the family of
Re/Max...a nationally networked Real Estate company. Blue Water
remains locally owned and operated and maintains a large
selection of all different kinds of real estate properties.
----------------------------------------------------------------
CLOUDCROFT ONLINE SPOTLIGHT -- CARLSBAD CAVERNS
----------------------------------------------------------------
One of the most attractive things about Cloudcroft is its close
proximity to several vacation destinations. Carlsbad Caverns is
just 2 hours from Cloudcroft and is one of the most high profile
destinations in the Southwest, with over 515 thousand visitors
last year.

While the Caverns are some of the deepest and most extensive in
the world, they are also very accessible. Regular tours all
year.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Q AND A -- BECAUSE CLOUDCROFT ONLINE READERS WANT TO KNOW
----------------------------------------------------------------
Q - Is it going to be a good winter for skiing in Cloudcroft?

A - You're asking me to consult my crystal ball, but if the
early and fairly heavy snows of November are any indication, it
could be a pretty decent year. Cloudcroft's winter season is
so "iffy" because we are the southern-most ski area in North
America, contributing to our over-all mild conditions.
----------------------------------------------------------------
COMING EVENTS
----------------------------------------------------------------
November 24, 25 -- CLOC Melodrama. Thanksgiving performance.
Zenith Park Pavilion.

December 2, 3 and 9, 10 -- Town of Bethlehem reenactment.
Sacramento Methodist Assembly.

December 12 -- Cloudcroft School District bond election.

December 16 -- Santa Town. Zenith Park.

December 23 -- Caroling in the Clouds. Lantern-lit caroling
from Burro Avenue to the museum beginning at 4 pm.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Newsletter:

I've never been to Cloudcroft yet, but through your newsletter,
I feel as if I know the people there.

I had to write a letter this time as your story about Easy had
me almost in tears. When you recalled your emergency--that
almost had me going with the beauty of a life saved. I'm sending
an email about making a donation. My kids have tons and tons of
stuffed animals I'm sure we could part with two or three.

Thanks for the newsletter. When I do get up to Cloudcroft I
plan to find you, Don, and shake your hand. You are a fine
writer. Keep up the great work.

Nina

Dear Newsletter:

My name is Edward. I have only recently been privileged with
receiving the newsletter, and would like to take the time to
tell you how much my fiancee and I both enjoy it, and look
forward to future writings.

We are coming to Cloudcroft in a matter of days to get married.
We have both been thru there on separate occasions and because
of the people and scenery, we both knew that this would be the
best place to start our future together. We are due to arrive
on the 19th of this month and are scheduled to be married on
the 21st. We will be staying at "THE SUMMIT INN". Because of
our family and work, we will only be in town for a few days, but
are already planning a return trip for our delayed honeymoon
next year. Karen and I would appreciate anyone's input on the
"must-see" places to see and visit while we are in town. We are
hoping for snow as we live in Texas, and it doesn't snow here
often.

There was a time that I thought being in love for me was just
never meant to be. Then came Karen. We met thru work and soon
discovered that we had been living parallel lives over the
years. We went to the same schools, worked the same jobs, and
even knew the same people. Yet somehow, before now, we had
never met in person. It was the day we first met that she
reached for my hand and touched my heart. For that I thank God
daily. That's part of my wanting to be married in Cloudcroft.
Having been there before I know you can't get much closer to
Him than there, and after I say "I do", I want to be able to
look up and say "thank you God, for sending me an angel".

Until we meet as friends,
The Future Mr. And Mrs. Gonzalez

Dear Newsletter:

The last week in July I left the subtropical heat of Florida
and flew out to Cloudcroft. I am an amateur astronomer and
stayed for five days with Mike and Lynn Rice at New Mexico
Skies.

I immediately fell in love with the area. It was warm during
the day with humming birds buzzing everywhere. In the late
afternoon it stormed and produced a beautiful rainbow. By ten
in the evening, it was clear and the "Milky Way" stretched all
the way across the night sky that the area is so famous for.

I had breakfast at the Barn Door Cafe and certainly had a
sufficiency of good ole' southwest cooking. Then I took a cruise
to town, Apache Point and Sunspot observatories. Sunspot wasn't
officially open, but one of the courteous electricians gave me
a great tour anyway. Apache Point has a self-guided walking tour
of the solar observatory. It would be interesting even to someone
who is not an astronomy buff.

I had a wonderful vacation and plan to return again as soon as
I can make it work out.

Sincerely,
Charles Mullen

Dear Newsletter:

My dear friend, Judy Walters, forwarded me the latest newsletter
and suggested I should subscribe. So, can I please???

I get the Mountain Monthly and enjoy it immensely - after I sort
out all the petty articles, that is.

We have a cabin east of town and spend several months in CC each
year and dearly love it. Hope to eventually spend even more time
there. There are so many wonderful, kind and helpful folks in the
area.

Dear Newsletter:

Hello fellow readers.... My name is Steve and my wife is
Georgia. I'm a respiratory therapist working in Oklahoma City.
We found that living in a small community is more to our liking
so... we live in Marlow, OK... about 70 miles south, southwest
from OKC.

We decided about a year and a half ago that we wanted to move
to Cloudcroft and have since been working towards that endeavor
as much as possible... and the closer we get to the summer of
2001 (moving time!!), the more ancey we get!

We've been receiving the online newsletter via our home email
address for about six or so weeks. We just bought a cottage here
in Marlow, OK and our phone has not been transferred yet... GRR!
I've been trying to figure out how I subscribed to the online
newsletter in the first place so that I could also receive the
newsletter at this email address. That way I can check for and
read the newsletter while I'm at work... as you noticed... I
finally fingered it out!

We love the newsletter and all the things you folks talk about.
It brings Cloudcroft closer to us. It makes us "wannabees" feel
like we are there. As we read the "Dear Newsletter" letters,
it makes us "homesick" for Cloudcroft. It keeps us excited and
anxious for next summer to hurry up and get here!!

My oldest son, Jason, and his family live in north Las Cruces
and they are so excited that they're looking for some land in
Cloudcroft as well. I am originally from Carlsbad, NM,
graduating from Carlsbad Senior High in 1971. So, I'll just
be moving back home!

I've been to Cloudcroft many times as a boy and several times
as an adult (the last time was summer of 1998) and I still
remember the wonderfully refreshing smell of the pine trees
and crisp fresh air. I have five sons and they want to move
to Cloudcroft as well.

Thank you for this wonderful newsletter and please, please...
keep them coming!! We look forward with great anticipation for
each newsletter. Thanks for taking the time to give us a bit
of Cloudcroft over the "net"....

Steve and Georgia Smythe
Marlow, OK
