CLOUDCROFT ONLINE NEWSLETTER #29
October 13, 2000
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Subscriber:
After over six months of publication of this newsletter, I was
a little surprised when we received more reaction to the
"Toilet Controversy" (October 6 issue) than anything else we
have written. I guess that tells us where our priorities are!
Here's another one for you. What is the proper way to install
toilet paper in the holder? (a) With the paper coming off
from the top or (b) the bottom? I am a from-the-bottom person
myself. If you would like to weigh in on this discussion feel
free to email us, giving us your choice and reasons why.
It is our mission at Cloudcroft Online Newsletter to present to
you, our readers, the most pressing problems facing our
society and an ongoing dialogue on how to solve those problems.
We hope the two presidential candidates will address the
"TP from the top or bottom" question in their next debate.

LOOKING AT THE WEATHER
----------------------------------------------------------------
While we have been affected by the recent cold front, it seems
the front has had a more dramatic effect on our neighbors at the
lower elevations.
Temperatures plummeted in the Tularosa Basin (from highs in the
90s to highs in the high 60s) for a couple days this past week.
In Cloudcroft, we had highs in the low 50s for two or three days
earlier this week, but that was only a diversion from our usual
highs. We have received a little moisture in the past 72 hours
but nothing appreciable.
----------------------------------------------------------------
VILLAGE POLITICS
----------------------------------------------------------------
Mother Nature had her say on the turn-out for this year's
Oktoberfest. Saturday was chilly and Sunday was downright
inclement, taking away from the scheduled outdoor activities
such as the foliage tours and the Zenith Park functions.
The brave souls that came to town enjoyed themselves for the
most part. Many of them from the South Texas area said the cool
conditions were a welcome relief from the stifling conditions
along the Gulf Coast for the past several weeks.
----------------------------------------------------------------
INSIDE THE SHOP -- CLOUDCROFT INN
----------------------------------------------------------------
At the intersection of Highway 82 and New Mexico 130, The
Cloudcroft Inn features a full-service restaurant specializing
in char-broiled steaks and a full menu. Open for breakfast.
----------------------------------------------------------------
CLOUDCROFT ONLINE SPOTLIGHT -- APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY
----------------------------------------------------------------
While the buildings are not accessible to the general public,
the observatory invites visitors to come and stroll the grounds
and enjoy one of the most striking views of the Tularosa Basin.
The Apache Point Observatory is located 18 miles South of
Cloudcroft.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Q AND A -- BECAUSE CLOUDCROFT ONLINE READERS WANT TO KNOW
----------------------------------------------------------------
Q - What is the foliage looking like in the Cloudcroft area?
Have all the leaves fallen from the aspens?
A - We are probably at the peak of our fall foliage season
right now. Usually the aspen leaves are the first to go with
regard to the many different species of flora in the area and
the aspens are hanging on to their leaves as I write, but it
will not last for long.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Newsletter:
Thanks so much for Your Newsletter! Look forward to it every
week. I sure enjoyed your story about the commode. Just goes to
show us that some 'old' things are better.
Keep up the good work!

Dear Newsletter:
Got a chuckle out of the toilet issue. We know as we just built
a house and had to use these "wimpy johns". You should hear our
friend across the lake on that same subject; I just imagine the
government's ears are burning. Next they are going to regulate
the washing machines. Have you seen the new ones? They suck.
Enjoy the newsletter.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Newsletter:
We have been receiving your weekly letter for several months
now and truly enjoy it! I can almost smell the fresh mountain
air with every newsletter! We were just up there last month for
our yearly reprieve from Texas heat. Oh, how I hate to leave.
I'm still laughing from this week's letter about your toilet! :)
Thank you for bringing a little bit of Cloudcroft to us every
week.

Dear Newsletter:
Congratulations on beating "the system" with your "new" Eljer
toilet. I love to hear of people who have done this and I
danced around my computer desk when I read your article. Some
government regulations don't make any sense at all.
Again congratulations and thanks for a great newsletter.

Dear Newsletter:
If that old Eljer makes even a slight whistle, they'll probably
blast it with a machine gun. I read your article on the WT and
was ROTFLMTOWTIME (which some of your readers may not know means,
"rolling on the floor laughing my tail off with tears in my eyes").
You've just proven once again that seemingly mundane true life
experiences are often the best source of great humor. Thanks for
the great delivery...but Peg is still probably right...you are
a sick puppy!!
Also I want to thank you for the weekly updates. I'm hoping to
find new property up in the Sacramentos due to the loss of our
cabin in the Scott Able Fire. Your newsletter is a great reminder
of some wonderful memories of the enjoyable times our family and
friends spent at our cabin at Skyridge over the past 31+ years.
I'm sitting here now visualizing the Aspencade.
Keep up the good work...and watch out for the WTB patrol.

Dear Newsletter:
Thanks so much for having the Bitterroot fire photo on your
website. What a beautiful, yet absolutely terrifying picture!
I downloaded it on a transparency and showed it to my world
geography class. It caused a lot of discussion (and sympathy
for the elk).
Your newsletter is always a highlight of our week. We are
already making plans for staying a month in Cloudcroft next
summer.
Thanks,
David and Sandy Hanebutt

Dear Newsletter:
Thank you for the newsletter, I really enjoyed reading it.
My family loves Cloudcroft and we try to take any opportunity
we can to visit. Now that we receive the newsletter, we can see
what exciting things are going on down there and plan our
weekends accordingly.
Thanks again!

Dear Newsletter:
I've really enjoyed your newsletter! It makes me feel like I am
there! We have 13 acres there in the Mayhill/Cloudcroft area!
As soon as we get our home built we will be there permanently.
But till then, I will live there through your newsletter.
I have a favor to ask of you. In your earlier newsletter you
had a picture of the Bitterroot Fire. Some how I deleted it and
would love to have that picture again to show my husband who was
there. He is a Captain with the California Department of Forestry
(CDF). They work extremely hard for all of us! I am extremely
proud of him and all the firefighters! They deserve all our
gratitude and thanks!
Thank you so much for this favor! Even if it is not possible,
thank you for everything!
There in our hearts,
Karen Loftis
