CLOUDCROFT ONLINE NEWSLETTER #22
August 25, 2000
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Subscriber:
School bells are ringing again in Cloudcroft and all over the
country. It is time for a cliché: "Where did the summer go?"
I'm ready for some good ole college football. My favorite teams
are Texas Tech, New Mexico State and whoever is playing against
the Texas Aggies (that should get you College Station readers
headed for your computer keyboards).
Cloudcroft merchants are digging in and preparing themselves for
the summer's last hurrah... Labor Day Fiesta. Lots of familiar
faces will return for one last warm-weather trip to the high
country before turning their full attention to their kids'
school activities and all the other distractions of the Fall.
Perhaps this winter the dumper on God's snow truck will be fixed
and there will be more winter fun in the Sacramentos than there
has been in the past couple of years. Since Cloudcroft is so
far South, our snowfall fortunes are a flip of the coin, but when
we get the stuff, it is usually up to the "W"s on the hip pockets
of our Wrangler jeans for several weeks.
Note: Problems with our mail server delayed our newsletter this
issue, but we do not expect this to happen again.

LOOKING AT THE WEATHER
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Fall is pushing through. The first ones to notice were the
humming birds. All the males have left town leaving the females
behind to teach the hatchlings how to fly and look pretty. Soon
the ladies will leave too, for points South and warmer digs.
Instances of rain have been fewer this week than last and the
afternoon breezes are noticeably more brisk. Highs when the sun
is shining are about 70. Overnight lows are in the low 40s.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
VILLAGE POLITICS
-----------------------------------------------------------------
There will be another school bond election in the Cloudcroft
District in December. The past two elections were defeated.
Cloudcroft Online Newsletter has agreed to run a Q and A segment
in this section with a list of 10 questions submitted to
proponents and opponents of the issue. For the sake of brevity,
there will be two questions answered each week by both sides for
five Newsletter issues. For the sake of fairness, we will not
edit the questions (submitted by a panel of interested citizens
representing both sides of the issue), nor will we edit the
answers, except for the sake of good taste, which I do not
anticipate.
As the editor of Cloudcroft Online I do not feel my opinion on
the issue is pertinent. It is my feeling that our readers
have the sense to weigh the question without my throwing in my
two cent's worth. I feel more comfortable with my role as a
news reporter rather than a news maker. I wish more of our
newspaper, radio and TV reporters felt the same way.
If we are successful in setting up the Q and A, the first
installment will be in the November 3 edition of the Newsletter.

Q AND A -- BECAUSE CLOUDCROFT ONLINE READERS WANT TO KNOW
----------------------------------------------------------------
Q - I have my own website for by business. Can someone else
take away my website address?
A - This question recently came up in Cloudcroft.
If you own a website that has a registered "domain" on the
Internet, no one else can take your website without your
permission. Those are websites that end in the familiar ".com",
".org", ".net", etc.
There are some websites that are "sub-hosted" by other websites
(there are several such websites on Cloudcroft.com of which
Cloudcroft.com is the host) that aren't officially
registered with the Internet and appear only on those sub-host
sites. This is a website of choice for those that have very
specialized products or services that are of interest to a very
specific group of persons. For instance, we sub-host businesses
on Cloudcroft.com to be seen by persons specifically interested
in lodging, real estate, dining and activities in Cloudcroft,
New Mexico and the surrounding area.
Those website names (or "domain" names) are still available
for purchase by others and if you have a desire to own your own
domain name for general use on the World Wide Web, you should
register it now. We can do that for you at Cloudcroft.com.
You can continue to use your existing website through a "sub-
host" even if the name is registered by someone else, but you
will not be able to register that name or use it at any time in
the future on the over-all World Wide Web.
This may be a little confusing. If you have any concerns or
questions, email Cloudcroft.com's Webmaster, David Thomas, at
david@cloudcroft.com and he and I will try to clear them up
for you.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Newsletter:
I am glad to see that Cloudcroft has a good on-line site. I have
loved the area ever sense I was in the military.
I hope one day I can live there. I am looking forward to seeing
how much better this site gets through the years. Keep up the
good work, I will support your efforts in any way I can.

Dear Newsletter:
While in Cloudcroft recently for one of my "runaways", I had
the unfortunate experience of developing a nasty sore throat,
earache, drainage, you get the idea. The fortunate part of this
experience was that I got to meet and become a sometimes patient
of Dr. Montoya. I have been working in the health care field for
many years and it was a delight to meet a young woman of such
character: open, caring, direct, and speaking in the people's
voice.
Too often a village physician becomes so much a part of the
community that they are taken for granted. If we could only
live a day in their life we would soon understand what an asset
they are to any community and so should feel blessed that they
have chosen to share their skills and life with us. Don't let
this fine doctor go unappreciated, she is quite remarkable.

Dear Newsletter:
Thanks so much for your e-mails. It is indeed a pleasure to
receive info about Cloudcroft. My wife and I spent this past
weekend in Cloudcroft and, as always, had a wonderful time.
Thanks so much for the info about the Mayhill Fire Department
Enchilada Supper. We enjoyed that, too. My wife's family has
owned a place in Cloudcroft since 1963, so she feels like it is
her second home, and it has become my second home as well.
Again, just to say thanks for the work that you do and will be
up again on Labor Day.

Dear Newsletter:
Your mention of Paul your neighbor reminds me of a man in High
Rolls that must be his cousin.
Tommy Hatfield is the guy that will come to your home at 3am to
fix a whogee or whatzit and not charge. My uncle John Lewis of
High Rolls told me Tommy would do all their maintenance for 25
years and never charged. He just retired from the fire dept at
Holloman AFB and Tommy told me he's busier than ever. People
like him are indeed a rare find.

Dear Newsletter:
I have received your letter for the past two months and I look
forward to each issue. My wife and I enjoy reading about the
place we both love and are looking forward to living at. We are
coming to Cloudcroft in October for the Octoberfest. We really
had a great time last year and I am sure this year will be also.
Thanks for keeping us non-residents informed about the area we
want to be residents of.
