CLOUDCROFT ONLINE NEWSLETTER #218
June 11, 2004
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Subscriber:
I have an idea for a tee shirt.
It has a target on the back and the caption underneath reads:
"I'm over 65. Stab me here."
Senior citizens are, overall, such a trusting lot. They don't
expect dishonesty from others. I don't know why. That's the
bunch that had to face down Hitler. They watched organized
crime ravage our big cities and labor unions. They should be
the most cynical among us, but they're not.
There are integrity-challenged people among us that make a
tidy living ripping off the older generation. I know of
situations where automotive repair work wasn't done, but the
older person was charged for it anyway. Recently a TV repair
guy told a live-alone widow he was going to do her a big favor
by selling her a 25 inch TV for 300 dollars. He was even going
to install it and it had a one year guarantee.
You can buy a 25 inch TV for 170 dollars. Installing it means
you plug in the cable and the electricity. All new TVs have
at least a year guarantee. This guy was going to walk off with
a $130 profit for five minute's work and he said he was doing
the lady a favor.
Dishonesty is hard to digest no matter who the target...young
or old. I think fraud laws should be tougher. After all,
there's nothing more premeditated than planning to steal
someone's money. Older people are the easiest targets because
they have an aversion to complaining. Many of them are also a
little ashamed of being made to look foolish and lots of times
they are the folks least able to afford being scammed.
It's not a bad idea for older folks to have a thirty-ish friend
or relative at hand and in full sight when entering into a big
ticket purchase agreement with someone. They call them
"advocates." Ideally your advocate should be a male, over 6 feet
tall, about 250 pounds, with a disagreeable look on his face.
Those are the kind of scarecrows the dishonest birds are afraid
of. Normally the advocate doesn't even have to say anything.
The potential rip-off artist will get the message.
Of course, younger people are not immune from being taken
advantage of. If that happens, call a lawyer.
On second thought...call the big guy with the disagreeable look
on his face.

SPECIAL -- SEEKING COLD CASE HELP
----------------------------------------------------------------
On August 31, 1966, a pregnant 18-year-old Cloudcroft woman
was strangled to death with a telephone cord in her El Paso
home at 2514 Federal. Her maiden name was Ruby Lois Corn.
She was married to Specialist 4 James Stephens of Salem,
Oregon, attached to D Battery, 333rd Artillery at Ft. Bliss.
He was on duty the night she was murdered. The case remains
unsolved, and her husband is now deceased. Ruby has two
surviving siblings, Al and Kathye who own/operate the Stove
and Spa Store on Hwy 82. Two old classmates of Rubys are
searching for any contacts, knowledge or even rumors about
this case in order to bring closure and justice for her family
and friends.
If you have any information about this case, please e-mail us
at choward@utep.edu or canover47@aol.com. We will share
everything we learn with the family and the Cold Case Squad at
the El Paso Police Department.
Thank you for your assistance; any information would be greatly
appreciated.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Newsletter:
Regarding your dreams of appearing at functions without pants,
I've had the same type dreams. Some of them caused me to
awaken to a most satisfying relief, realizing that it was
only a dream; others seemed to labor throughout the night.
I've stood in the presence of greatness; attended church; and
greeted people in my office, wearing nothing but a "Tee" shirt.
I've given much thought to these dreams, and, though not a
psychiatrist, I've analyzed them: In my dreams, I appear as I
am while sleep in bed.

Dear Newsletter:
Good morning, Dan. I recently subscribed to your newsletter
and laugh out loud at your personal interest stories. I will
be visiting Cloudcroft this month for the first time (my
sister-in-law and brother-in-law recently moved there). I
keep telling them they have to meet you.
Can't wait to go to the "Show Me Your Shoe" parade. Think
I'll go sans PANTS!

Dear Newsletter:
I am in total agreement with you regarding leaving the dress
clothes behind and sticking to the jeans. However, I do have
to contradict a point you made. The zippers on jeans are not
always reliable. I have recently discovered a pair of my
jeans whose zipper comes down at any chance....a sneeze, a
deep breath, etc. So my vote: Stick with the jeans but beware
of the zipper always!
Enjoying the newsletter as always,
Sarah

Dear Newsletter:
Oh My! What a great newsletter this week!
I now work from our home here in Cloudcroft and only have to
go to the office in Las Cruces once a week. I no longer have
to dress for work. Panty hose are only used now for dryer
vent lint collectors and the occasional funeral. (Who invented
this torture devise anyway?)
I also have several pairs of jeans/shorts and feel that this
should be sufficient for any occasion. I will wear a skirt
with sandals if I think it would be fun and comfortable, but
really do refuse to put on high heels and those dreaded
panty hose! I think all neck ties and panty hose should be
burned!
Lets have our own revolution and start a bon fire at Zenith
Park! Mountain life is fantastic!
Thanks,
DM
Mayhill
