Dear Subscriber:
There have been some things bothering me.
You know, those pesky little thoughts that refuse to leave your
head. Maybe if I write them down, they'll go away and leave me
alone.
-o-
Experts say laughter promotes good health. I guess that's true
unless you're laughing at a big tattooed guy because he can't
get his Harley started.
-o-
I used to enjoy riding elevators until I got a glimpse of that
thin little cable that holds them up.
-o-
I think they should rebuild the World Trade Towers just like
they were before 9-11, but I think they should add an extra
floor. I don't know why. That's just what I think.
-o-
Major league baseball players are considering striking again.
They're upset because the annual average salary in MLB is ONLY
2 million a year. I'm hearing violins.
-o-
Peggy insists on picking out my new underwear. If I were to go
into a store and pick out HER new underwear, I would likely be
arrested.
-o-
I want the media to tell me what the news is. I don't want them
to tell me what the news MEANS. If I need that information,
I'll ask my barber.
-o-
A friend of mine said he quit his job as a school teacher for
health reasons. He was starving to death.
-o-
John Madden is by far a better sportscaster than he was a
football coach (and he was a pretty dang good football coach).
-o-
What's going on with my taste? I used to hate Brussels
Sprouts. Now I can't get enough of them.
-o-
Peggy's idea. If you order a pizza and you don't intend to eat
it as soon as you get it home, order it half cooked and finish
cooking it just before you're ready to eat. No charge for that
advice.
-o-
Why do virtually all TV mail order products cost $19.99?
-o-
Why is a standard 2"-by-4" board actually 1 and 1/2 inches by 3
and 1/2 inches? Isn't life confusing enough as it is?
-o-
Some airlines are filing for bankruptcy. Others are making a
profit. The ones in trouble are blaming the terrorist attack
of September 11, 2001. Weren't the airlines that are now
making money in operation during that time?
-o-
I found some old 45 rpm records in a file cabinet this week. Do
you realize most college freshmen have never played a 45? Most
of us (including me) don't even own a workable record player. I
feel a particular loss.
-o-
Why are my favorite shoes the ugliest ones?
-o-
There. I feel better already.

Another rainy week. Temperatures are dropping slightly. Highs
in the low-70s. Lows in the mid to upper-40s.

SPECIAL -- A NEWS RIDDLE
----------------------------------------------------------------
In 2001, I committed parricide, matricide, fratricide,
homicide, regicide, double deicide, and suicide. Who was I?
We will publish the letter that best answers this question,
which is based on a news event in 2001.

VILLAGE NEWS
----------------------------------------------------------------
Arguments over parking spaces along Burro Street highlighted
the last Cloudcroft Village Council meeting. The village legal
advisor said the village council can't say who can use the
parking spaces or when.
The premium in the number of parking spaces in downtown
Cloudcroft has been an ongoing source of controversy for years.

Q and A -- Because Cloudcroft Online readers want to know
----------------------------------------------------------------
Q - I haven't been to Cloudcroft in a long time. Did Dr.
Maurice Tripp from California follow through with his idea about
building an x-ray tube manufacturing plant in Cloudcroft?
-- Jeannie Campbell
A - You HAVE been away for a while.
To refresh memories, Dr. Tripp came to Cloudcroft in the early
90s and spread the word he was going to build an x-ray tube
manufacturing plant here. He said the high altitude would be
ideal for manufacturing such items. He had the villagers very
excited with the prospect of increased employment, etc.
Dr. Tripp was wined and dined and celebrated for some time
around the village, until someone bothered to check out his
story. It turned out the altitude had nothing to do with the
advantages of manufacturing x-ray tubes. Tripp's story and his
promises began to fall apart.
A long answer to Jeannie's short question. No, Tripp didn't
build his x-ray factory in Cloudcroft, or anywhere else that we
know of.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Newsletter:
Thanks you for your wonderful newsletter. I have enjoyed reading
your articles about life in Cloudcroft.
I took my family up there on the Aug. 10 weekend. I enjoyed the
cloud burst and the fresh air. We stayed for lunch and enjoyed
a small hike on one of the trails. I wish we could have stayed
longer.

Dear Newsletter:
I have loved reading your newsletters over the last year.
I was planning a trip to visit Cloudcroft with a friend who
lives in New Mexico.... Sadly he died at the start of the year,
but I do intend to visit in the new year.
Cats and dogs.
I live in the lake district in the UK. The lakes are the
wettest part of the UK, the valley I live in gets 11 ft of
rain in a dry year! Something my farmer friend in New Mexico
found hard to believe, God irrigates Cumbria well!
I farm what is called here a Hill farm, beef and sheep and
my farm hands are my 9 collie dogs. Your Tom sounds just like
my farm cat Puggy, an old hand at sorting sheep dogs. They
may be able to turn a herd of 60 limousin cattle single
handed, but all 9 together still have not bossed one black
and white 21-year-old cat, and all doff their caps in respect
as they pass by. He rules the farmyard, new additions to the
work hands' gang are shown from the start who the boss is.
Why 9 Dogs!
It's like human life, some at the end of their working life
going on to lay in the sun and give their advice to the younger
ones. Some go on maternity leave, some are on the dole and once
they get the hang of rounding up the sheep and not trying to
worry them, become the main dogs in the farm hands' gang.
It can take 2 years to train a good dog, so you are always
having to have fresh talent in the pipeline. I have seen the
old black and white cat with his back to the door and 6 dogs
around him at one time and not one doggy paw ever moved within
striking range of a very fluffed up and spitting Puggy! I think
Puggy would said well done Tom!
You returned to find your home a little rearranged. Please
spare a thought for me coming in for breakfast one spring
morning at lambing time to find a 6-year-old sat at the table
eating his cornflakes with "my best mate," who was also eating
cornfakes at the table, his pony Misty!
Thank you for all your hard work.

Dear Newsletter:
Your story about the dogs & cats in the domestic disturbance
was wonderful!
Really got a kick out of it! We have 2 dogs & 5 cats, and I
could really relate!
Thanks,

Dear Newsletter:
This is a very funny newsletter. You guys really have your
hands full. We have three dogs. One is a miniature pincher,
one cocker, and one doxie. We have three little brats at our
house. I bet with 4 dogs and two cats they keep you guys hoping
around full time.
Thanks for the newsletter.

Dear Newsletter:
I really got a good laugh out of your domestic disturbance
story. As the "head dog" of a small pack of poodles (all of
whom are rescues), I can certainly relate to the mischief that
your furkids got into.
The "poor pitiful me" look also gets to me every time All I can
say is that I am well-trained.
Also thanks so much for the photos of the bears in the area
that were in a previous newsletter. My 85-year-old father is in
a nursing home here in Lubbock. Cloudcroft is one his favorite
places. Looking at the photos made his day as well as calling
up some wonderful memories for him.
Thanks for the newsletter. Keep up the good work.

Dear Newsletter:
In August, I took ten ladies from the Arlington Woman's Club
Quilting group to my place in Cloudcroft. We quilted and
enjoyed the cool air, the afternoon rains and the beautiful
skies.
We also went to the Otero County fair and visited the craft
exhibits. We had lunch at the Lodge and at Memories in
Alamogordo. Some hiked the trails, others walked the
neighborhood and all shopped downtown.
What fun it was to hear their excitement and their joy when
seeing the scenery for the first time. It is always fun to
make the drive down to Alamogordo, especially when you know
and they don't that they are about to see a panorama of the
Tularosa Basin.
Many thanks to the gentleman from Ruidosa for the photographs
of that drive.

Dear Newsletter:
What an extra special treat to SEE Cloudcroft and vicinity, in
addition to the great words about it each week!
Growing up in San Antonio (Tx), our family came out to the
southwest on several occasions when I was a teen. I distinctly
remember the Blue Spruce (I believe...), more so than in
Ruidoso.
In 1990, my husband joined the Air Force, and we were stationed
in Clovis, at Cannon AFB. Numerous trips around the state
cemented our love for the mountains and deserts. Sacramento
Methodist Assembly was a wonderful spot for a retreat. The
Azores, Mississippi, Nebraska, and now Maryland have not dimmed
our appreciation for and love of New Mexico, and especially the
Sacramento Mountains!
My husband, David, loves bass fishing and golf, so we are
wanting to find good fishing spots in the region, when we come
for vacation.
Thanks so much for the wonderful newsletter---it keeps us in
touch!
